The Hempstead County Quorum Court opened their meeting Thursday (9-26) by approving a transfer ordinance moving $12,000 per month from the general fund to the jail budget. This is not to exceed $60,000 for the rest of the year. These funds will go towards meals. The JP’s passed a transfer ordinance for $1,000 for the public defender’s office. Also, $15,000 was appropriated to pay jurors. The Quorum Court passed a resolution allowing the county to apply for a grant from the Rural Services Block Grant program for the Bingen Volunteer Fire Department for life-saving equipment. The fire department is putting up $7,500 in matching funds. The JP’s discussed insurance for county employees but no action was taken. The JP’s also heard from the Emergency Services director, Jessica Hardin, about her need for $30,000 to write a new mitigation plan for the county to cover emergencies. Three-quarters of these funds will be repaid by a grant. This will be tabled until next month. The JP’s met new Family and Consumer Sciences agent Terrie James from the Cooperative Extension Service and then the meeting adjourned.
